General Footy Writing: Could Liam Jurrah be as exciting as Jeff Farmer?

By Steve Healy

Liam Jurrah, the 20-year old high flyer from the outback, has been awarded this week’s Rising Star nomination after kicking eight goals in his four games and taking some spectacular marks.
Last week, against Port Adelaide, Jurrah kicked three goals in the first quarter and four for the match, giving the Demon faithful a lot to be happy about. Could he be the next Jeff Farmer?
He’s a bit different to Jeff, height wise and with his role, but in terms of excitement he could easily shadow Jeff. Liam is 190 centimetres but can be used as a marking forward or a crumbing forward.
Liam was born and bred in Yuendumu, 267 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs and an hour and a half from the closest town, Yuelamu. It is a great sight, seeing Yuendumu from satellite view on Google Maps. It’s a small town with a few large ovals of red sand, which Liam must’ve played on as a junior. He played for Collingwood last year in the VFL, and always looked like he would be picked up by an AFL club.
English is Liam’s third language, but he spoke quite clearly when talking about his nomination. Liam was Melbourne’s second Rising Star nomination in a row, after Jack Grimes last week.
Hopefully Melbourne can get another nomination this year, equalling their total of three from last year. Rising Star nominations are always a good measure of a young side.
Maybe Wattsy can get called up and deliver a ripper game.
But for now we celebrate a high-flyer from Yuendumu.

    The Walpiri Wizard!
I wonder if he and Austin Wonaeamirri would make a great forward combination in the future.
