General footy writing: Carn the Arckos!

Tired of going to the Royal Park after games at the MCG? Punters looking for a more cerebral letdown after four quarters of footy might consider walking past the Royal Park and heading onto the Richmond Uniting Church in Church Street, where Tim Phillips’ Arcko Symphonic Project is putting on a Pulling the Strings recital at 5.30pm this Saturday.

The Arcko project (carn the Arckos!) gives voice to rarely performed large ensemble works with an emphasis on Australian composers. Here’s the team sheet for this Saturday:

D. Chisholm: Jonestown Threnody (2008) the Australian premiere of this recent work in which Chisholm continues his exploration of darker themes, tight harmonies and intricate rhythms, combining to create a work of great energy and intensity.

N. Butterly: Canticle of David (1957/59) a rare performance of a work by this iconic Australian composer where spirituality is in the foreground: Loss, Prayer and Joy.

T. Dargaville: Dinner Dances (2001/09) originally written for string quintet and an MTC play this is the first performance of this revised and expanded version. Get swept along by the various “courses” and the driving rhythms that inhabit Dargaville’s music.

B. Colbert: …floating in the void…(2005) space, light and sound are employed and explored in this evocative and delicate work; the tranquil soul of the piece being occasionally and forcefully interrupted.

Including musical interludes by James Hullick’s remarkable GOTHIOLIN-violin machine!
