Footy: The triumphs and troubles of Richo, Part 1

By Domenic Favata

Matthew  Richardson is a Tiger legend, and a legend of the AFL. He’s known for his spectacular leaps, goal kicking and shows of emotion. He was a player who on his day could win a match off his own boot. He could kick a match-winning goal and then stop one on the goal line minutes later. He was a dominant force.

Had he been with a stronger club, he could have done bigger things. But that was never going to happen as he had yellow and black blood in his veins and loved his club. This is a four-part story of the triumphs and troubles of the great Matthew Richardson.

Early Career: 1992- 1996

Matthew Richardson, a teenager from Devonport, Tasmania, was taken under the father-son rule in the draft of 1992. Matthew was following in his father, Alan “Bull” Richardson’s footsteps. Educated at St Brendan-Shaw and Don Colleges in Devonport, Matthew was primed for a glittering AFL career. Combining a 196cm height and 90+ kg, Richardson had sublime speed and endurance for a man of his frame.

Pulling on the Number 12 jersey in his debut season of 1993, he played 14 games and kick 32 goals. Not bad, not bad at all. One of his best games of the year came in Round 10 when he had 23 disposals (17 kicks 6 handballs), 14 marks and kicked 6 goals in a 29-point win over Sydney at the MCG. He won a Rising Star award that round; Nathan Buckley, James Hird and Mark Riccuito also had nominations that year. It was an excellent debut year for Richardson.

He was soon known by the nickname “Richo” and was a fan favourite. In 1994 he played 19 games and kicked 56 goals. He was growing in stature, game by game; he was becoming a player that coaches had their hands full with. He won his first club goalkicking award. Richmond were having some struggling years, a finals drought. Could Richardson bring the Tigers up the ladder?

In 1995 Richardson suffered a horrific torn ACL ligament when he crashed into the fence against Sydney in round 9. He had surgery and missed the rest of that season. Up until that Richardson had kicked 27 goals and was tearing defences apart. Richmond had a good year considering, finishing third.

Richo came back strong in 1996, playing 22 games and kicking a staggering 91 goals. His knee was as good as new, and he was becoming one of the dominant forwards in the game. He earned his first All-Australian guernsey and won several awards.  Crowd flocked to come see Richo dominate. His spectacular hangers brought the house down and some goals he kicked for his size were unbelievable.

Matthew Richardson was becoming a champion on the field, showing his emotion as he carried Richmond on his shoulders.

Stay tuned for Part 2

Comments

  1. Damian Watson says:

    Great piece Dom,

Yeah I’ve seen the footage of Richo crashing into the fence there were even suggestions of suing the SCG staff at one stage, they had to move the fence a few metres back.

I think he booted 7 in the match were Fitzroy played it’s last game in Melbourne while he had that stupid pony-tail.

  2. Richo’s best game: 10 goals against the Dogs in 2004, which followed 7 goals against the Swans at a wet SCG

  3. Another one of Richo’s many qualities deserves a mention: his generosity. A great example of this is coming to visit Tyler Fishlock, the 7 year old who lost both his eyes to cancer then got tormented by a bully who took pleasure in hurting him and scaring him by clicking scissors close to his face.

Richo’s an absolute legend, both on and off the field.

  4. I liked when he gave the umpire the bird against Hawthorn in 2003 lol

Yeah Richo’s a good bloke off the field as well.

  5. Steve Healy says:

Richo is a legend, but my favourite memory of him was only 2 years ago when Flash flew over his head and took that grab.

im gonna send some photos of my trip in a sec

  6. Talking about Richo makes me want to watch the Richo tribute DVD again.

One moment that sticks out vividly in my mind is when he dummied and ran around Jonathan Hay, took a bounce, fumbled it while running towards the goals, got control of it just as he was falling through the behind line and kicked it past the right side of the post.
Not a great description, but if you’d seen it, you’d know what I meant.

  7. Steve Healy says:

yeah I’ve seen that, that was funny

  8. I’ve seen it Adam, its a memorable goal, if he had of missed he would have looked like an idiot

  9. Damian Watson says:

I remember the match in 2005 when Richo took that screamer in his 250th game against Port Adelaide and booted the goal to put his side in front after they looked dead and buried early.

Just came back from a 30km ride!

  10. Steve Healy says:

I’ll never forget Richo’s unpredictability in front of goal, he was the only player in the history of the game who wasn’t certain of kicking a goal from any distance out.

  11. But he didn’t miss Josh, because he’s Richo.

So many great Richo moments…where’d ya ride Damo?

  12. Heard of Travis Cloke Steve? Or Michael Quinn? LOL

  13. Steve Healy says:

Quinn’s irish, Cloke’s not quite as bad, but i’ll never forget when he missed that sitter early in the final quarter in QB 07, the game turned after that and WE GRINDED THOSE PIES TO DUST! Final score 13.16 94 to 11.15 81, Robbo kicks his 7th from the boundary line on the siren. Ah what a game.

I recorded Port V Carlton from 2000 on 7two last night, I havent watched it yet though, and I got the first half or so of Essendon V Sydney in 2001 before the tape ran out

  14. Damian Watson says:

It’s a shame that out of the 280+ games he played only 3 were finals matches similar to Bob Skilton who only played one final and they were both loyal to their club.

I went riding up at the Lysterfield Hills only a few minutes away from Waverley park, I think they used the same track for the Commenmwealth games.

Remember when Richo missed from point blank range against Sydney lol

  15. Damian Watson says:

Yeah I saw the end of the Port-Carlton match this morning where Burgoyne goaled after the siren, our defence was horrible in that last quarter!

  16. Onto cricket for a sec – Younis Khan is still on 0 after 14 balls. What’s he doing in one day cricket?

  17. Comment 13- shutup steve

  18. Steve Healy says:

lol, at least Travis Cloke was decent in 2007

  19. comment 18- shutup steve

  20. Steve Healy says:

    comment Brad Green- no

  21. Wheres the One Dayer being played at today?

I can’t believe Quinn missed that goal, that’s not acceptable in a final.

Also can’t believe that Ray Martin wants to change the Aussie Flag

  22. Sam Kekovich does too. He wants to put a lamb chop under the union jack. ;)

  23. If it was to be changed, it should be changed to green and gold.

Status – watching I Get That Alot

  24. hmm i know..lets put some pink on the flag!! :)

  25. Steve Healy says:

sorry I meant comment Maric- my internets running slow again, but its impossible that it could have run out since we were on holidays

  26. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah no

  27. Comment Angus Graham – I spent ages working out the meaning of that Steve, then I realised.

  28. I was thinkin “There aint 44 comments yet” lol but Graham changed his number didn’t he

  29. Yeah 25 used to be Jay Schulz. A lot of Tigers changed their numbers in the offseason actually.

  30. Schulz didn’t deserve a number as low as 25

  31. I wonder if any player has actually changed to a higher number? Not counting people who switch clubs, Newman becoming captain and getting 17, etc.

  32. *pendleburybear waves at comp screen*

  33. Tarrant changed from 17 to 20 at Freo, Jeff Farmer wore a higher number for a season one year (Steve or Damo can tell you more about that) and Dangerfield went from 19 to 32.

Hi Pendlebury bear, how are you?

  34. Yeah Josh I actually remember Jeff Farmer switching numbers briefly. Also I just remembered Kayne Pettifer went from 8 to 15.

  35. North made the best changes with numbers this year, Anthony and Warren to number 4 and 5 respectively while Ziebell will inherit the number 7. Guys im thinking of getting 7 on my guernsey instead of the planned 20.

  36. *PENDLEBURY BEAR NODS AND SMILES AT JOSH*

  37. What sort of answer is that bear?

  38. that means that he appreciates ur attention and that hes a very happy teddy..YES HE HIS!! NAWWW PENDLES!!

  39. Danni, a couple of years ago, I was on the Collingwood Wikipedia page for some reason, and at many points during the page, someone had put in the words “SCOTT PENDELBURY IS HOTTT” or “IS DA HOTTEST COLLINGWOOD PLAYERRRR” in. All over the page. Was that you?

  40. Lol i love wikipedia’isms like that

  41. lol…nope wasnt me.
guys i think Rafa has a gf!
    but app he denies it…
    hmmm

  42. comment- 35 lol josh if u get 7 then u save 15 bucks! lol

  43. I’d get number 9 but i don’t think it looks too good

  44. EXCUSE ME! i have a number 9!!

  45. Good on you Danni

  46. I want a number 9 also.

  47. lol that sound so awesome im gonna say it again.
    “i have number nine!” :)
    hehehehehhe

  48. Maybe Steve will come out and say he wants a number 9, for Trengove, and Damo will say he wants one for Chris Johnson…oh wait, who would? :)

  49. ADAM dont pick on my Damo!

Number nine is the hottest gersey number ever!

  50. I’m not picking on Damo, I’m picking on Chris Johnson :P

  51. hmmmmm…okay then

status- looking at the beck of Superman and loving how good the number nine looks on his jumper.

  52. Chris Johnson isn’t that bad, he’s just a Melbourne-discard.

I could get 9 for Swallow, but i don’t like him as much

  53. Josh you will get so much value from Swallow! hes North’s Pendlebury!

  54. No, Pendlebury is the Magpies’ Swallow.

Anyone else excited about the Biggest Loser starting on the weekend?

  55. Damian Watson says:

That’s probably one of the worst shows on TV Josh!

  56. What? WHAT? What is wrong with it??

  57. whatever Josh same thing!

nahh i dont watch that show.

    COME ON RAFA!! :(

  58. What a star. . You’ve sumed Richo up really well in this first part of his career Dom.
An Josh I most certainly am looking forward to the biggest loser lets hope theres some more look a likes lol.

  59. lol Damo it must be a big hit in the country!

  60. Its the biggest thing since sliced bread! Haha litererly.

Saw some picture of Sharif the other day, he lookin fine.

  61. Steve Healy says:

biggest loser is the crappest thing to ever be put on tv

  62. Damian Watson says:

Watching incredibly obiesedd people try to exercise isn’t exactly my idea of TV viewing, the first and only time I saw it two people jumped ship and quit the competition anyway.

That host AJ Rochester makes it a dull boring show to watch anyway.

  63. lol what if i was the host? LOL i would eat everthing that was supposed to be used to ‘temptation’ that way no one would put on weight and i get chocolate lol

  64. Yeah but watching how they change and the fears they have to overcome is pretty good.

AJ Rochester quit, Hayley Lewis is the new host if that will curb your disinterest?

Steve are you still sending the pics or is your internet still slow?

  65. mmmmmmmmmmmm…cake

  66. Steve Healy says:

I dunno, now that im back on ill try again now

  67. Fine, does anyone like watching Masterchef?

  68. …Masterchef
    ANDRE!! :)
    *squeals*

  69. Damian Watson says:

Well that is a positive change, the host is actually someone who overcame her weight instead of one that is fat lol.

It’s just another one of those reality shows that we stole from the US. I think the US version had a guy that weighed over 500 pounds lol.

  70. Steve Healy says:

yeah i like watching it but it can get a bit repetitive

  71. A couple of years ago the BL AUS had a guy who was 216kg i think, his name was Damian too! Lol

Well Masterchef has sorta merged with the Biggest Loser this year ;)

  72. Damian Watson says:

    Yeah Masterchef isn’t too bad.

lol Danni Andre used to go to my friends school. he is the Greek one right?

  73. Steve Healy says:

oh yeah, he’s South Australian Damo, you must have some sort of connection with him

  74. Steve Healy says:

what do you mean they have merged?

  75. They have a masterclass now apparantly where they do the same thing Masterchef did, cooking healthy foods

  76. Damian Watson says:

hahaha yeah maybe I’m a distant relative.

I’m not sure if this is confirmed but Australian idol might be cancelled next year, I hope that it is cause I get the feeling everyone is bored with it.

  77. Steve Healy says:

Australian idol should be cancelled, its gone on for too long and no one even watches it, the novelty of it has gone away

  78. Yeah i don’t like Australian Idol, its dull and takes the sting out of music

  79. Steve Healy says:

the best shows on channel 10 (non footy) are the simpsons, neighbours and the 7pm project, and they all happen to be on in that order

  80. I HATE Australian Idol, my brother and mum enjoy it though and it used to be regular Sunday night TV last year when it was on. For some reason my bro also likes the Biggest Loser.

Hows this for an idea for a reality TV program: A bunch of people get chucked on a desert island, isolated from the outside world, then they have to participate in challenges that test their cooking ability, singing and dancing ability. People can vote on who gets eliminated, but if someone popular gets eliminated they may allowed to come back in.

  81. Damian Watson says:

Yeah I like the Simpsons although I think they altered the timeslot for that malcolm in the Middle show.

7PM Project isn’t too bad, Neighbours should also be cancelled!!

  82. Sounds like Survivor a bit Adam

How about this? A footy show featuring kids :)

  83. I like Malcolm In the Middle, Dr. Phil and Judge Judy, Big Brother used to be my favourite but now its Biggest Loser and Neighbours. The 7PM Project is okay, but the cast members don’t act very well. I used to love Rove too. Oh and Ch10 have the best news program

  84. Steve Healy says:

yeah that sounds pretty good Josh.

Neighbours is all right sometimes, its pretty funny cos it’s pretty dodgily put together

  85. Oh yeah, and all the contestants are either really hot girls, or sweet, but socially awkward geeks.

  86. Damian Watson says:

    Yeah Judge Judy is hilarious.

Yeah that is a good idea Josh, we should ask Channel 31 lol

  87. Sounds like Beauty and the Geek haha. But its all their for a good, entertaining show!

  88. My fave non footy show is probably the Amazing Race. Oh and Man vs Wild. I used to LOVE the Chasers when it was on.

  89. I never watched the Chasers, i was against it. I like the odd-gameshows too like Deal or no Deal and Go Go Stop 8)

  90. Oh yeah I remember Go Go Stop. It was funny because some of the questions were so stupid!

  91. Damian Watson says:

Yeah the Chasers were hilarious as well.

Hey Josh which gameshow would you prefer- Hot Seat or Deal or No Deal?

  92. Steve Healy says:

the chasers is hillarious, I was watchin go go stop the other day.

does anyone watch the shack? thats pretty funny

  93. Damian Watson says:

Oh yeah Steve I think they cancelled the shack lol

  94. Yeah the Shack is alright.

Ahh that’s a tough one Damo as i usually flick between both of them during their timeslot. Probably Hot Seat coz it can create conversation in my loungroom.

  95. The guy off the Shack was learning to wrestle the other day, it was funny lol

  96. Yeah I can imagine Nitro doing that.

I think Hot Seat’s better than Deal because its general knowledge rather than luck, I still prefer the original millionaire.

  97. Damian Watson says:

oh sorry I meant that one of them has left lol.

  98. Damian Watson says:

Wait a minute they did axe The Shak they’re just filming the last episodes.

  99. Plus i can’t stand Andrew O’Keefe, but Eddie isn’t much better.

  100. Steve Healy says:

I dont really watch hot seat or Deal, I usually dont watch tv in the 5:30 time slot

  101. I usually stop what i’m doing to watch the sports news at 5:39, then watch one of the gameshows until the Simpsons comes on and then its tea

  102. Steve Healy says:

by the way, congratulations Jim Stynes’ parents, Australian citizens today

  103. Steve Healy says:

sorry guys gotta go, im playin a game of cards with my family

  104. Damian Watson says:

Yeah that’s usually my routine as well, try and guess how many celebrities have appeared on the Simpsons lol it’s more than I expected.

Yeah I heard about that good on them for getting their citizenship, by the way did the Aussies win? I haven’t seen Pakistan’s innings.

  105. I dunno, but Australia probably won, it’s Pakistan for christ sake lol.

    I dunno, i’d say 79?

  106. Australia won by 40 runs

  107. Wow, Rafa retired against Murray in the 3rd set

  108. Damian Watson says:

Well the series has wrapped up. lol I’m still counting but I can assure you it’s more than 79. lol

  109. I’ll have a guess Damo and say 334.

  110. Damian Watson says:

Well if you count all the minor celebrities and the movie the total is 455 which is more than the total number of episodes.lol

  111. What is making you count them anyway? Lol, okay i’ll say 444.

  112. Oooh i was close! Even if it seems i commented after seeing your post! lol

  113. Damian Watson says:

Apparently their is a show on this Sunday about some of the celebrities who appeared or voiced in The Simpsons and since you brought it up I just had a random idea of counting them lol.

By the way what I counted might not be completely accurate since I am using Wikipedia lol.

  114. Oh ok fair enough.

Haha i just saw an awesome mini-golf course on TV, it has a par of 21 and its in a shopping centre lol.

  115. Damian Watson says:

Where is the course? probably overseas.

  116. I’m not sure, it was on Sports Tonight Play of the Day.

Just wondering, is it gonna be easy to meet up at the footy next month and how will we manage it? Like meet outside gate 4 or something?

  117. Damian Watson says:

Well I should be able to go, the transports no issue for me because the train station is just outside of Etihad Stadium lol.

I don’t care where we sit or meet it’s up to you guys.

  118. Yeah i’ll be going train, might bump into you at the station Damo lol.

Well i’ll be following my Dad and he likes to sit in the bottom level but usually likes to get up and go for a walk around the stadium lol

  119. Transport’s no issue for me either. I walk to station, I get on train, I get off train, I walk to MCG. I’m not an original, but I’d still be happy to come along.

  120. Yeah sure Adam, by the way the games at Etihad not MCG lol.

  121. Oh, what game are you talking about anyway? I guess I just assumed MCG.

  122. Geelong v North Melbourne, Feburary 21. Yeah they don’t play games at the ‘G during the NAB Cup

  123. Damian Watson says:

Yeah no worries Adam it’ll be good to meet you, North v Geelong Sunday 21st Feb.

  124. Hope my train won’t be late, i heard you can’t trust public transport in Melbourne

  125. Ok cool.

I’m off now guys, catchyas later.

  126. Ok cya Adam

I dunno why but i’m a tad excited about school.

  127. Damian Watson says:

Well Connex is out so this new train network might be a little more relaible.

excited about school? that doesn’t sound like you lol.

  128. Hopefully it won’t last for long, should be gone by the time i go book shopping lol. Nah first couple of weeks of the school year are good coz you get back into the routine of school on friday, and getting excited about the footy that night.

I don’t understand the train lines, i just wanna get on the train and for it to take me to my destination on time.

  129. Steve Healy says:

I could meet you on the train on the way there Damo, since you get the glen waverley line.

Im not really excited about school, bloody hell only 2 more full days until school

  130. Damian Watson says:

Yeah but all transport has it’s flaws.

When are you making your next radio appearance?

  131. Not sure, i contacted the host of the program through Facebook the other day asking if i was going to be doing work with Crackers again this year and i’m still waiting for a response. But i’ll probably start week to week programs during the NAB Cup Grand Final week or somewhere along that time

  132. Damian Watson says:

Yeah maybe, you get on at that Darling station?

lol I’m glad I don’t start until Monday.

  133. I think im the latest to start on Tuesday, haha i’ll be thinking of all of you on Monday haha

  134. Steve Healy says:

I can, it just means it a bit of a longer walk than Alamein station.

  135. Steve Healy says:

I have no idea why they got us to start on Friday, it makes no sense.

  136. Steve Healy says:

comment 124 was the 20,000th comment on this site I think

  137. Damian Watson says:

Well doesn’t worry me with which train you catch.

We started on a Friday last year and the temperature was 45 degrees and a couple of the classrooms didn’t have air conditioning lol.

  138. Steve Healy says:

We started on thursday last year, that Thursday was 43 I think, but we had school photos the next day, luckily they were inside

  139. We have school photos like 4 weeks into the new school year, yet swimming sports in the 2nd week.

  140. Steve Healy says:

we have swimming sports in the 3rd week I think

  141. Lol i remember chuckin my friend in the pool last year, luckily she didn’t have her phone in her pocket
