Crio’s racing (on thin ice!)

I must admit I nearly adopted the old adage…”If you can’t say something nice, say nothing”…and stayed away from any preview this week.

Is it just me moping after losing or is this a remarkably “highlight-free” weekend for Australian racing?

Maybe, like Cook’s sooks, I need a hit out in Alice Springs (where they race on Sunday) before continuing to circle the country searching for an elusive win.

Like the attack offered by the Chairman’s XI in the Red Centre, there’s little depth at Pioneer Park’s meeting, a modest 5 race programme with very few noms – maybe they can punt on British Bulldog in the first as an omen.

The Alice Springs Turf Club (in a neat link to our crio’sQ?), promotes itself as having one of the country’s most picturesque courses, located at the foothills of the beautiful MacDonnell Ranges. They race 34 times a year and find that the Sunday slot gives wide exposure but, other than the Cup Carnival in May, the meetings can best be described as “lacking depth”.

Another Club which races this Saturday and boasts of its location is Esperance Bay…. “Where the Surf Meets the Turf”.

I’ve been to neither of these tracks and, whilst I’m guessing the bloodstock agents would give them a wide berth, I’m sure that they provide unique and distinctive racing experiences….as does the quaint Woolamai which has a picnic meeting on the road to Phillip Island on Saturday.

Bruised but not yet beaten, I’ll be manning the bag at both Moonee Valley on Friday night and, of course, Caulfield on Saturday. Congratulations to both Clubs for making an effort to compress their 8 race cards in to a manageable timeframe.

There’ve been some “technical issues” with racing fields this week and I’ve just uploaded Caulfield, but I’m guessing that if you are taking a Quaddy then you either care less or know a lot more than me!!

For the sake of kicking off the argument, here are some thoughts:-
MR5- 1400m. 2,12,13
MR6- 1100m. 8,10,13
MR7- 2000m. 6,13
MR8- 1700m. 13
A mate of ours – who is a dedicated multi punter and No13 zealot – will love this scenario!
Good luck!

  1. Im with you Crio- its not a good weekend to be going all out especially for me after the last one
News from the beach is non existent with few noms this week
By the way Crio and anyone else who has one – what race- meeting or venue is top of your bucket list? Mine was Coonamble till I achieved it 2 years ago so Im looking for another – maybe outback Qld?/NSW

  2. What about King Island?…be a ripper for you and Heather. Great food and wine and a captive audience! Calendar tinkerings this season means the launch is December 14.

  3. Had my share of food/wine at previous Clare Saturday Easter meetings when our firm sponsored the races back in the 90s – may pass on K/Island

  4. Crio, the large German chap would love you for life if the 4 dreaded 13s got the quaddy.
Also big crow in the first for EZ’s Trailofdestruction

  5. Thanks mate.
Katelyn Mallyon did not ride in the last tonight so you might even snaffle a jockey upgrade for the 2yo?!

  6. Further to that point, there’s a dearth of hoops going to Caulfield but why would you put K.Mallyon on an unraced 2yo in a non-claimer if you intended to bet?

  7. H.Haitana has had his lifetime ban lifted. The part I can’t believe is that this is a result of him writing a letter to authorities – read his book. He could not have written a credible letter.

  8. Why did he write to them, why didn’t he just ring-in, boom boom
