Crio’s Racing: Flemington, Brisbane and Sydney Swimmers

Anyone working on the racecourse now is besieged by “responsible gambling” pamphleteers and a  determination to embrace a politically correct tide alerting any of the few wayward punters likely to visit our wind tunnel that they might lose. A lifetime in the betting ring has revealed many sad tales and it is a disease to be confronted.

An unusual, and possibly effective, deterrent for punters leads the racing listings for tomorrow’s fairly humdrum winter Flemington meeting. Any punter who attacks the form guide from the top – not always the way as pessimists like me often start at the “get out”! – will see that Race 1 is the “Von Costa de Hero Plate”. Winner of the Sires Produce at his third race start, “Von Costa bloody fortune” thence kept bookies’ kids in private schools as he became a classic “teaser”, beginning with a dramatic and marginally unsuccessful Slipper plunge and concluding with a humbling red lantern in last year’s Emirates.

So there is no gilding the lily as punters confront the first race at HQ. Kavanagh has a gun – Liveandletdie was outstanding on debut – whilst Hayes is producing the $1.2m colt Columbus. Smerdon’s Indulgent is race hardened and expected to be competitive.  This is a scary start to a tough meeting. I’ll never punt on a horse that’s not trialled down the straight and, not armed with this mail, it is a portent for the day. STAY OUT!

My best bet is The Red Emperor E/W in MR6 No15.

Brisbane’s Group races are over-rated and I’d wait until next week. If desperate, maybe Lochiel at cricket score odds in R5.

Sydney’s a bog. Look to the stallion lines.

Good luck!
