When the bigger meetings roll around it can be a bit overwhelming wading through all of the form and fancies. As most punters would admit, on first perusal you’re hoping for something to “jump out’ at you.
SR7 1500m F+M Quality G1 No12 E/W 40/1
Given, however, that this revelation appeared at 5pm Wednesday there’s every likelihood that other techniques and decisions will be implemented between now and “enactment” – on course at Moonee Valley for Friday night’s ripper card and then with my trusty transistor out at Kew C C tuned in to Rosehill’s feature laden meeting on Saturday.
Those of us who like to look at the Acceptors well before formguides are published are familiar with the ritual – instinctively you cast a judgemental eye over the fields looking to gauge the strength of the meeting and, in particular, focus on the highlights.
There were plenty that drew the eye today.
Friday night’s options are many and varied and mostly high quality through from R3 (3yo SW+P 1200m) to the big G1 (R7, 1200m, WFA).
The William Reid (MR7, 1200m, WFA) is a beauty. Samaready is quite rightly going to be fav but has an awkward inside gate and plenty of capable challengers….Gregers, Shamexpress, Spirit Of Boom, Thump…terrific race.
Up in Sydney on Saturday a few more “Championship Challengers” step out as appetites are whet for the feast ahead.
Golden Slipper markets will either be set in stone or shattered after the boys and girls contest their “qualifiers”, the Todman and the Riesling (1200m, 2yo, G2). Popular wisdom has the fillies way ahead.
SR3- Todman – Unemcumbered (1) 11/4. Jabali (2) 3/1
SR4- Riesling – Earthquake 10/9on. Good fillies potential bridesmaids:- Mossfun (3), Memorial (6), Twirl (8), even More Radiant (9).
The other obvious races for initial scrutiny are the pair of G1s, the Coolmore and the Ranvet.
SR7- Coolmore Classic (1500m, F+M, Q, G1) has the usual bunch of evenly matched, excellent mares (minus Appearance!). Catkins (1) has been very good. Dear Demi was eye-catching. Lots of others with chances, including the aforementioned Longport.
SR8- Ranvet Stakes (2000m, WFA, G1) matches Fiorente (1) v It’s a Dundeel (2). Fine support cast. Great watching. No bet.
It’s another terrific weekend of racing with, of course, a massive month ahead. I’ve still not got a bag to swing so need to supplement lost earnings – any tips or taunts welcome.
