Crio’s Question?

It is, quite rightly, the habit of sports pages to end the year with lists of highlights.

But, before we replace the calendar, I’d like to commemorate some of those who departed in 2014 – though legacies live on, the world turns quickly and the back page features move on accordingly.

Obviously all areas of human endeavour suffer the cycle of life and death but I’m wanting to recall some who left us this year and their impact on our lives and their sport.

Racing most tragically lost some stars and some toilers who were way too young – Nathan Berry, the highest profile, to illness and Caitlin Forrest and Carly-Mae Pye in horrible accidents. Here in Melbourne the death of the great “Professor”, Roy Higgins, triggered an outpouring of wonderful sentiments as racing folk recalled a champion bloke and hoop. We all felt a little older.

Cricket, of course, has just been through the Phil Hughes tragedy.

Aussie Rules, naturally, lost stars of yesteryear, though few with the impact on us 50-somethings as the sudden loss of the much loved Robbie Flower.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I don’t mean to be sombre – wonderful memories of happy times often accompany loss. Who has some to add?
