Crio drops his guard

Tomorrow’s $1m. Gr1 Sprint (MR5, 1200m, WFA) has been hyped for months and whilst it has not attracted the International challengers initially mooted the presence of Black Caviar will ensure a record Final Day crowd flocks to a sun-drenched Flemington.

This should add some zest to the Carnival. I hope so. Since Derby Day I’ve been redeployed to the Nursery where my initial excitement has been dampened by empty paddocks around us (cnr Archer and Hyperno) and a resultant deflating atmosphere.

My colleagues on the Rails (including Budge barking the odds at Stand 22) report a similarly lacklustre betting week as the GFC perhaps impacts on the leisure/punting dollar.

They are hoping for a big day tomorrow. Saturday was pretty even and, whilst Tuesday’s results looked promising, we walked in to the roughies and had a shocker. But the last two on Oaks Day have the “Firm” back in the fight and ready for what should be a spirited betting day.

Let’s hope – and assume – that “Cav” wins easily…it would be awful if she didn’t, though it should be recorded that Moody’s horses are not firing and L.Nolen is in a slump (lay the combo for the place over the next month).

The rest of the races will attract debate and, we hope, money.

A man with the initials of JTH has claimed that I never give a clear directive/tip, so here’s some “oil” for this excellent card.

I like horses who’ve been down the straight beforehand. MR1 No4.

Gold Salute is on a last chance. Class and N.Rawiller and long odds. MR2 No5.

Pacino is way “overs” and Nikolic will rate perfectly. MR3 No5.

A sucker for Amah Rock, despite the gate. MR4 No1.

Cav. MR5, No3.

Raffle. Wish 16 had a gate. Last ever chance to Dao Dao- like me a non winner! MR6 No13.

Despite the marble, Avienus is better than these, with 5 the danger. MR7 No1.

Bauer should be well in the red. MR8 No1.

Need a get out. D.W.O’Leary rarely wastes petrol – MR9 No9 – and save on Candle – MR9 No4.

Quaddie is F/1,5/1/F

The vibe will be back tomorrow. I’ll be wearing dark sunnies and lovin’ the views…and hoping to snare a winner….any help on this site or visitors to the stand will be welcomed and, of course, top odds provided. Good luck!

  1. Love it Crio. I have always thought the inner-bookie in you meant that it was the volumes of money which set the market and your outlookt. But in this case the tone is cavalier – like you’ve found your inner punter. Sad thing is we both like the same nag in the last.

The 16 in the get-out for me – Ship in the Night

    Good luck all,

    Crio,

Oaks Day in the Nursery has quietened down since the halycon days of a few years prior. It coincides with the rise in Cantala Stakes day patronage.

Cape of Good Hope (HK) ran well here. Rocket Man (SIN) was never going to appear.

Bauer will anchor many a quadrella.

  4. I agree with JTH so what about a “special ” each week for us
