  1. Great post Pete – made me laugh – and commiserations! I spent a fair bit of that game on my feet exultantly gesticulating at the TV, especially with Manly down on troops. However, it does balance the books (somewhat). Having an elephant’s memory, I recall the last round in 2002 (turned out to be the Northern Eagles last game). They needed to win at Brookvale to make the semifinals (which they never did in their mercifully short history – never made the semis and only ever won two games in a row on six occasions). They were playing Penrith, who finished that year in 13th position (and there were 15 teams). The Eagles were embarrassed (as was I) to the tune of 68-28. This is some sort of “payback” in my illogical supporters ledger of long held grudges! :) Hopefully the Panthers will take out their embarrassment on the Tigers on Sunday!

  2. Cheers Niall. The other Panthers v Manly match that sticks out in my mind was the playoff for 5th spot in 1985. I was 12, and we were on holidays in Cooma. I remember listening to the mid-week match on a crackly AM radio. Panthers ended up winning that game 10-7 (in extra time if memory serves correctly) which propelled them into the semis for the very first time. Alas, the mid-week game left them with no juice in the tank and Parramatta smoked them 38-6 in the elimination semi. The game you refer to in the last round of 2002 was a watershed one, because from there Penrith continued to improve, eventually taking out the premiership in 2003 – a meteoric rise from 13th in 2002. Ah, the glory days. I am not so confident of a good showing this weekend, although always hopeful!
