Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: History made for the Collingwood women

True Believers, a truly great weekend; one we should all remember forever. For our expanded club this weekend will go down in history as the weekend our AFLW team had their first win and our Collingwood Magpies Netball team had their first win. Fantastic. In another 125 years, the question that will be a standard part of a trivia night competition will be: “When did Collingwood record its first victories in the AFLW and Super Netball competitions?” Can they both go on to win their competitions? Great performances by both teams. We’re proud of you.

AFLW

Our first win; and didn’t they belt out the song (and the commentator asked Moana “Do you know the words?” Well done ladies. Were any of us there? Report pls?

Some great play, particularly in the third quarter, but great defence in the final quarter; hope the boys were watching.

Some feedback on the game: Go to http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2017-02-25/pies-break-aflw-duck-cfc and http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/video/2017-02-26/aflw-the-emotions-of-win-no-1. Want to start looking at things seriously? Go to the Match Centre report and Individual Statistics at http://www.afl.com.au/womens/matches/match-centre?matchid=100640403&competitionid=10064. How did our ruck not get BOG?

Next weekend? Round 6 – vs Freo in WA on Saturday, 4 March (Note the double-header with the AFL side – I wonder what the crowd will be); bounce at 10.35pm (WST – local) – 6th vs 7th / 64.08% vs 59.76% – it’s going to be close. Anyone going? Anyone even close?  Team – later in the week. Live TV coverage on 7mate if you happen to be in Perth; otherwise FoxFooty.

And then there is ‘commitment to the team’ – a quote from Kate Sheahan to her dad: “This was our dream Dad and we did it. It didn’t finish perfectly, but I made you proud and that’s all that matters.” Kate, good luck on the knee injury from all of us. And to her dad, best wishes to all those dads who have watched from the sidelines when their daughters were seriously injured playing footy. Been there.

Good luck, ladies.  We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with you.  Onward and upward.

Netball

The Super Netball season started last weekend; Round 2 on last Saturday. Did anyone go? I watched it on TV – a very tough, physical game – again, some technically perfect ‘hip and shoulder’ blocks. While the Team suffers from being the overall favourite for the competition they seemed, in my view to approach the game with a methodical, professional (almost inevitable) approach. Well done.

Some feedback on the game: http://supernetball.com.au/2017/02/25/magpies-notch-first-win/ and http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-25/super-netball-firebirds-magpies-swifts-thunderbirds-gws-fever/8303912.

This coming weekend?  Vs Giants, who are coming off two wins and are at the top of the Ladder, at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne on Saturday, 4 March; tip off at 7.00pm (local).  Live TV coverage on Channel 9.

Go ladies.  We stand shoulder to shoulder with you.

AFL

Next Practice Match vs Fremantle on Saturday, 4 March at Mandurah, WA (Note the double-header with the AFLW game); bounce:1.40pm (local); No Free to Air TV coverage – just Foxtel. Anyone going for the double-header? Do we include anyone who lives in WA? Team later in the week.

Injury Update? Go to: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-02-27/important-pies-defender-josh-smith-hobbles-off-training-track. Keep an eye this week on who is still out when the general intent is for everyone to get two games in. The list is starting to be a bit frightening, acknowledging that many are just ‘doubtful’ at the moment:

  • Wells
  • Smith
  • Cox
  • Elliott
  • Daicos
  • Mayne
  • Crisp
  • Wills
  • Brown

Nothing heard of the status of Langdon or Ramsay lately.

Positive messages on Reid and Broomhead.

VFL.  First practice match vs Geelong on Saturday, 11 March; bounce at 11.30am (local) at the Holden Centre. More next week.

Other

  • Eddie Watch. Nice to see Eddie at the AFLW game. Where will he be this weekend – off to WA for the two games?
  • VFL Games. The breakdown of VFL games is: 10 games on Saturdays; 7 on Sundays; 2 Byes; 7 games at Vic Park and 3 double-headers. Could be worth putting some of these into your diary.
  • Also coming soon – for Canberrans, GWS vs North at Manuka – Friday, 10 March; bounce at 5.50pm. Wear your Pies shirt proudly in support of ‘AFL into Canberra’.

Other Social Activities. For Canberrans (mostly), don’t forget this Friday, 3 March the Manning Clark House lecture at ANU; bookings at http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/manning-clark-lecture-invitation-to-almanackers/.  Link to bookings is there.

And for Melburnians (mostly) the ‘Peter McKenna Odd Friday Lunch’ is on this Friday at the North Fitzroy Arms. Go to: http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/the-odd-friday-lunch-with-peter-mckenna/Love a bit of feedback on both?

Go Pies in 2017, especially our Collingwood Magpies Netball team and the AFLW side for their games this coming weekend. Go for both, ladies. Plus the AFL practice match too – no injuries and a bit of class?
