Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Four from four

True Believers, “four from four“. A great weekend, at first sight, but below the surface…

Great results, well-deserved by the girls; wins of questionable significance to both the boys’ teams. More below.

AFLW

Another Win – three in a row. They are putting together what we all believed they are capable of. A great performance with a very well-deserved result.

Some feedback on the game: Go to http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2017-03-12/report-pies-too-strong-for-gwsFor the statistics? Go to the Match Centre report and Team and Individual Statistics at http://www.afl.com.au/womens/matches/match-centre?matchid=100640604&competitionid=10064. Interesting statistics – we set up the two-goal lead in Q1, then maintained that advantage throughout the rest of the game at each break.  It could have been much more – team stats: clearances: 29 (us) to 16 (them); inside 50s: 37 to 12; marks inside 50: 10 to none. And as a reflection of effort: contested possessions: 107 to 75 and tackles 53 to 46. Well done, ladies. Those are numbers you should be very proud of.

Next weekend? Round 7, the final H&A game – Sunday, 19 March; bounce 1.35pm EDT. Versus Adelaide at Olympic Park. They are sitting 2nd, on four wins with a percentage of 159%. So, beating them we could get even on the Wins; getting our 92.7% up over theirs might be a bit of an ask. Both Adelaide and Melbourne are still in the hunt (realistically) for the GF against Brisbane the following week, though, again, Adelaide’s percentage is a big plus. Although Melbourne could sneak past them if they win against Freo and we do the job on Adelaide. For us, going into our second season with four in a row under our belt having just been pipped by one Grand Finalist (Brisbane – 4 points) and the possibility of beating the other (Adelaide) would be terrific.   Anyone going? Team – later in the week. Free to Air TV coverage on Channel 7 for Adelaide residents only; otherwise Fox Footy.

Good luck, ladies. We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Onward and upward.

Netball

A great win; well done ladies.  Loved the media heading: “Magpies produce dream-team form“. Pretty much says it all, actually.

Some feedback on the game: Go to http://supernetball.com.au/2017/03/12/magpies-produce-dream-team-form/http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-03-12/collingwood-magpies-too-strong-for-adelaide-thunderbirds/8347838 and http://www.smh.com.au/sport/netball/collingwood-magpies-get-19point-win-over-adelaide-thunderbirds-20170312-guwf9u.html.

Next. ‘Lightning’ at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday, 18 March; tip off at 7.45pm (local). Live TV coverage on Channel 9 (9Gem). Anyone going?

Go ladies.  We stand shoulder to shoulder with you.

AFL

Again, an interesting practice match. The media coverage states Collingwood “ran away with it in the first half”; this is, I think, a bit over-stated. Firstly, I acknowledge a win is a win is a win. As usual, lets have a look at the team statistics and individual statistics at http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/jlt-community-series/2017/4/rich-v-coll; click FULL-TIME STATS , then ADVANCED STATS. Click along the top line on each team to check the differences.

31 scoring shots (us) vs their 27; Their dominance in Clearances, particularly in the Centre is concerning and is something we’ve seen in other games.  Mostly the rest of the Team stats are pretty equal – and yes, I’d love to see them quarter by quarter. Good points? We had 10 players with Disposal Efficiency over 80%; against their 6. A very confusing game, statistically; not watched by me. Nice Opening Quarter (7 goals (us) to 2); we lost Q2 2 goals to 4. Good start to the 3rd quarter, then the wheels fell off – (7 goals to Richmond to one of ours; including us not scoring anything in the final quarter). But, again, of course, it was a practice match. Some match feedback at http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/jlt-community-series/2017/4/rich-v-coll. Some general comments at http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2017-03-13/the-ultimate-pre-season-form-guide-2017-v2.  Good to see Treloar, Reid and and Grundy amongst the Best. Anyone at the game or or who watched it on Foxtel? Your views?

JLT winner? Wondered how they pick who’s going to take home the silver? Go to: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-03-13/the-jlt-ladder-who-comes-out-on-top.

A concerning result re injuries – Adams (cut chin; not concerning) but Pendles’ late withdrawal (hammy – more serious). The comments re injuries under WHAT WE LEARNED of the MATCH REPORT (link above) – with potential inclusions for Round 1 including Pendles, Greenwood, DeGoey and Elliott; who to drop?

Next? A week off. That was the last practice match. The real season starts on Friday, 24 March; bounce 7.50pm – Round 1 versus Western Bulldogs (Remember them? 2016 Premiers) following the VFL match before it, an easy walk away. More on Round 1 next week.

VFL

First practice match vs Geelong on Saturday – a win, another after the siren. Did anyone go?

Some feedback at http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2017-03-13/gallery-vfl-magpies-begin-campaign and http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2017-03-11/thomas-vfl-matchwinner. Some performances by people who’ve been missing for a season or two. Worth following.

Next? A big afternoon and evening coming – Friday, 24 March. Head to the Holden Centre for the VFL practice match against Footscray (bounce 4.15pm) then wander over to the G for the Round 1 clash against WB (bounce 7.50pm). Anyone going? Reports pls?

Other

  • Eddie Watch. Quiet (concerning?). Feedback from our Melburnians?
  • Strike action? Now Pendles is a newly elected Board Member of the AFLPA, a strike by players is always an option, albeit a last resort: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-03-07/striking-still-a-lastditch-option-over-cba-says-pendlebury.
  • Other. GWS vs North at Manuka – a pretty good match to the last change; then GWS ran away with it – unfortunately for GWS, some injuries including Stevie J (concussion). Free entry to the final AFLW game at Manuka – GWS vs WB, Saturday, 18 March; bounce  7.10pm.
  • Rucks and Clearances? Anyone else ‘having kittens’ when Grundy left training early the other day? So how is Witts getting on? Go to: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-03-12/fit-witts-puts-hand-up-for-suns-ruck-role. I hope we do not get to rue that decision. And a question I’ll table next week – why are we getting soundly beaten at Centre Clearances but doing okay around the ground at Stoppages? Your thoughts? Sort of goes back to my “Play Grundy and Witts in the same team”.
Go Pies in 2017, especially our Collingwood Magpies Netball team and the AFLW side for their games this coming weekend.
