Bus drivers and Generals can’t prevent Superdog thrashing

GAWLER V RIVERLAND SUPERDOGS

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AFL MASTERS – ROUND SIX

SUNDAY 17TH OF JUNE 2012, TANUNDA

By Nick Kossatch

The topsy-turvy season continues for AFL Masters side Riverland Superdogs after it was thrashed to the tune of 90 points against a rampant Gawler team at Tanunda Oval on Sunday.

The visitors boasted four debutants; local identity Matthew ‘Doc’ Clifford and skilful Lyrup legends Adrian ‘Nookie The General’ Abdulla and Angus Giles. Mitch Jones is the regular away trip bus driver, but he played his first ever game of Australian Rules.

He acquitted himself wonderfully against the raid of forward entries delivered from the classy Gawler midfielders

Six foot three player Jason Trew started as the rover for the Superdogs whilst player-coach Shane Healy began at centre half back against an ex-amateur dual Mail Medallist but Healy defied his lack of height with timely spoils and Trew did the same.

Healy went forward to kick two majors with the second of those a spectacular ‘Buddy Franklin-like’ drop punt that curled against the natural arc which most left footers claim to possess!

Ric Frahn played his best game this year since returning from a self-confessed ‘working holiday’ in northern Western Australia. Frahn repelled Gawler attacks from his fullback position.

Abdulla was ‘the general’ directing players further up-field where to run to whilst he had the ball and he did the same on the bus trip home! His mate Giles also showed he will add skill to a side that displayed a lack of.

Clifford rid of his ‘Purple Night’ festivities at the Berri Football Club the previous night to provide poise and skill in the forward lines and in cameos as a midfielder. He actually kicked the ‘Dogs first goal which actually put some scoreboard pressure to Gawler.

Strong side Easts travel to Lyrup to play the Riverland Superdogs on Sunday July 1st at Lyrup Oval from 1pm. The Superdogs expect several key players to return for the clash.
