Bobs v Barrys

With Bob Murphy’s retirement and the infestation of gratuitous jaw-stretching names like Jack, Jake, Josh, Jasper and fucking Jarryd, it may be time to reflect on two great names rapidly heading for extinction. Not a single Bob or Barry has represented Port, Gold Coast, GWS and Freo.

Will Murphy be the last great Bob to play Australian Rules? Will Barry Hall go punching and kicking into the dustbin of history as the last great Barry?

I give you a team of Bobs versus a team of Barrys with the additional element of pre-match entertainment. Which Bob or Barry would you like to see perform before the Grand Final?

Feel free to add Bobs and Barrys from SANFL, WAFL, TASSIE, NSW, QLD, NT, ACT.

Over to you Knackers.

  1. Good stuff Phil.

I want to see how Barry Hall plays hard to chase the ball and battles with Bob Murphy.

    Cheers

    Yoshi

  2. Excellent Phil. But I’d have Barry Crocker sing before the game.

  3. Good set of teams, Phil. However I would suggest that you make Barry Cable captain-coach. That way you can play Cable as rover. He was a lot better than Barry Mitchell.

When it comes to pre-match entertainment, I’m not a huge Bee Gees fan but Barry Gibb would still be much preferable to Barry Manilow.

  4. Keiran Croker says

I think the Barry’s might have a stronger forward line and more depth … and yes, definitely Barry Crocker for pre game entertainment!

  5. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says

Barry Pascoe could play against his brother Bob

I’d find a spot for Barry Norsworthy too

Of course “Barrie” could beat both of these teams with one hand tied behind his back.

And AUFC legend Bob Neil would be wearing #130 in the familiar grey shorts.

Plus Barry White for the pre-game.

  6. Bob Hammond my first cousin twice removed played for North Adelaide and briefly Norwood.
He also coached Norwood to some premierships in the 70s.

  7. Paul Young says

Come on Dave – once Barry Manilow came out of the blocks with “I write the songs” you’d have all the MCG members in the long room singing along…..
“I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs”.

Yep you sure do Barry, you legend.

  8. Brilliant Swish!

  9. Phillip Dimitriadis says

    Bob Seger
    Barry McGuire

  10. Nice one Lord Bogan. The Barry’s looked 5 goal winners to me, but as the Barrie’s they win by 10. He WAS that good.
To even things up a bit add Bob Hank (West Torrens great; 224 games; dual Magarey Medals; raking left foot drop kick). To this day my dad says he is the best footballer he has ever seen (sorry Barrie).
Also Bob Shearman (Essendon, West Torrens, Sturt; All Australian 1961 Carnival; 255 games). Twice winner of the Craven Filter National Long Kick Championship. Traitor who left my West Torrens just to win 5 successive premierships with Sturt 1966-1970.
Bob Oatey (son of the legendary Jack – the coach of said premierships) captain coached Norwood and was a very skilful if slow rover for Norwood.

  11. Barrie (must be an SA thing) Barbary – North Adelaide and Woodville 1957-70; 213 games. Outstanding elusive midfielder. Was BOG in SA’s legendary 1963 first ever win over Victoria at the MCG. We went to Adelaide Airport to greet the returning players. Bigger than the Beatles!
“In a match featuring superstars Ron Barassi, Kevin Murray, John Nicholls, Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer, Darrel Baldock, Brian Dixon, Doug Wade, Sergio Silvagni, Noel Teasdale, Alistair Lord, Lindsay Head, John Halbert, Neil Kerley, Don Lindner, Bill Wedding, Robert Day, John Cahill, Ken Eustice, Geof Motley, John Halbert, Ron Benton, and Neil Hawke Barbary put in the best on ground performance, earning the O’Halloran Trophy.[2][6][7] The Adelaide Advertiser reported on Barbary’s performance:

At the MCG on Saturday his speed, tenacity and sure ball-handling were dominating factors in SA’s seven point win over Victoria. As SA’s best player, chosen by the Victorian selectors, Barbary won the trophy given by a leading oil company…… A steadfast refusal to admit defeat and the ability to gain possession against overwhelming odds are two of Barbary’s greatest attributes. Barbary knows his capabilities, exploits his skill to the full and lifts the morale of his team mates with his courageous and dashing approach.” (Source – Wikipedia)

  12. Bob Down to perform MC duties.

  13. Barry White – after doing the pre-match entertainment could start in the goal square.

  14. Barry McKenzie (I kid you not). Fitzroy 38 games 1968-72. Mobile ruckman who went to my West Torrens and won the B&F in 1973 under the “coaching” of Barking Bonkers Bustling Billy Barrott.
See my upcoming Big Mac’s feature for more riveting details.

  15. Phillip Dimitriadis says

Barry White is a beauty PB and I can’t believe I missed Barry McKenzie !! Do you reckon he inspired Barry Humphries? How has Dame Edna not performed in a GF? Bloody cultural cringe !!

If we include ‘Barrie’, Robran must surely be one of best Croweaters who didn’t play VFL?

  16. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says

I give you Barry and The Remains

    https://youtu.be/t-ne_H5HL88

Speaking of which, Bob Hank’s son Barry played for Torrens too.

  17. Joe De Petro says

Pre match entertainment has to be provided by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Now that would be a Grand Final act!

Is this love, is this love, is this love, is this love that I’m feeling?

  18. Phillip Dimitriadis says

Swish – Brilliant. Book the Remains for 2018 Pronto !! Bob Marley would have the crowd swaying for sure.

Sponsors? Bob Jane and Barry Plant

  19. Bob Dyer and Barry Jones on the Tribunal to review questionable MRP decisions. They’ll be busy!

    Cheers, Burkie

  20. Speaking of South Australians, even if one must mention Port Adelaide, Bob Quinn played 250 or so games, won two Magarey Medals (robbed of a third by a 5-2-1 system) and won the Military Medal at Tobruk (a prototypical Port Adelaide international away fixture). Was the 1947 All Australian captain and a champion rover. Averaging around two goals a game, he would slip nicely into a forward pocket.

  21. Phillip Dimitriadis says

Bob Dyer and Barry Jones !! Now there’s some vintage television Burkie. Pick a Box. Didn’t Barry give Bob a nervous breakdown?

Nice get Dave. Bob Hank, PB’s West Torrens mate, won dual Magarey’s after Quinn in 1946-47. Good time to be a Bob in post-war SA obviously !

  22. Terry barnstable says

Barry Capuano played for Essendon,Matthew Capuano was at North

  23. http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/the-mighty-quinn-footballer-soldier-man/ Re Dave Brown above
( this is superb by Mike Sexton re Bob Quinn ) Swish has nailed it re Bob Neil and Barrie Robran
