T2O – Stars v Renegades at the MCG – Who Will Rule Melbourne?

It was a Saturday night when I went up to the MCG to watch the Melbourne derby when the Melbourne Stars take on the Melbourne Renegades. After the Stars thumped the Renegades 122 runs only a week a go at Etihad stadium I wasn’t expecting what happened.

The Stars bowled first and they seemed in a pretty good position when Aaron Finch went out for 12 c. Pietersen b. Bird (F.O.W. 1/19) not long after Callum Ferguson was given LBW to Glenn Maxwell (F.O.W. 2/44). Soon James Faulkner came on and took the wicket of the dangerous looking Mathew Wade who was on 71. He then got the wicket of English all-rounder Ben Stokes. John Hastings got the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan. And James Faulkner got the wicket of Tom Beaton on the last ball of the innings. A great bowling effort from the stars with Michael Beer having a big impact on the game with just 13 runs from his 3 overs. They needed to chase down a total of 154 for victory.

When the stars came out to bat I was a bit nervous. Luke Wright went out for just 4 and Cameron White went out for 8 soon after we were in trouble at 2/14but Glenn Maxwell and Kevin Pietersen formed a partnership of 120 runs before Maxwell went out for 66 (3/134) they seemed like they were going to win easily, but then they started to tap the ball around and then Pietersen got caught for 49.  0 runs later Faulkner went out for 5. Soon after they needed 3 from 3 Keath hit it into the outfield and there was a misfield. They tried for 3 but there was a run out! Stars need 1 from 2 Triffitt on strike, hit it straight to the bowler and Hastings gets run out. Last ball of the innings and they need 1 run to win and stop it from going to a super over. Triffitt hits to short mid on Ferguson dives on it and dose a backhand flick onto the stumps, it hits! OMG! That is one of the greatest pieces of fielding ever! They’re going upstairs. It’s taking forever for the 3rd umpire to make a decision – it must be close – finally they put the result up………NOT OUT! The Stars have won. The crowd sends out a roar that could be heard from the other side of the city!

On the way home we watch the replays on the phone. They show that the bowler had knocked the stumps with his foot and set off the zing bails and the ball had missed the stumps anyway.
