Smokie’s smokies for Oaks Day.

Race 6: #3 Gliding. (then #2 Dowager Queen, then #5 Roma Giaconda).

J B Cummings collects Oaks trophies like he collects Melbourne Cups.

Race 7: #3 Proliferate. (then #1 Torah, then #9 Sleep’n Pete).

Comfortable winner in first two starts. Should threaten again.

Race 8: #4 Perturbo. (then #5 Master Harry, then #3 First Command).

Won twice at Flemington, and not disgraced by Sepoy last start.

Race 9: #4 Cosmic Causeway. (then #10 Sea Coral, then #12 Bianmick).

Should be far too strong for this lot.

Downers Declarations…

R2 – Kicking off with some early value with 7.Oasis Bloom (already backed from $16 into $10). Just its second start but impressive on debut when four deep the entire trip and just held off by Saint Etienne that had the cosy seat the whole way. Saint Etienne then ran in the first on Derby Day at $61 and was just pipped by Galah – hoping the form-line stacks up here. The trainer P.Morgan can produce lightly raced gems out of nowhere.

R3 – If 2.Ortensia ($6.50) is fit and healthy, surely it wins this.

R4 – Some handy rising sprinters here, am running with 3.Anise ($3.70), seems to have been freshened for a carnival run. It ran Foxwedge close first-up (who frightened Sepoy on Saturday). Watching market on roughies 12.Vain Attraction and 13.Saint Belle.

R5 – the Greys! Maybe 4.Limerock ($8) or 6.Translation ($8.50), but a very open affair. Perhaps just avoid and appreciate the silver spectacle.

R6 – The time-honoured VRC Oaks. With the superstar scratched, there’s not much exposed quality remaining. Can’t see much natural speed here, might work into Bart’s hands with 3.Gliding($7), has been set for this all along.

R7 – Quite keen on 1.Torah ($4.60). Impressive at MV, looks as though Flemington will suit. 8.Now You Know perhaps the horse on the up to hold out.

R8 –  Will be looking closely at the 4th emergency 20.Nicholls Court ($17) if it gets a run. Goes well fresh, and was close behind Almanac fave and straight specialist Temple of Boom in the Auries Star in August, and unlucky against promising speedster Bel Sprinter back in July. That’s good enough for this if he’s ready to go. Will be saving on 5.Master Harry ($3.60), a bit of hype around this one.

R9 – Er, go wide in your quaddies…

Hoping the wave from Cup day is still cresting, not crashing!

    Great get in race 2.
    Paid $7-90 & $2-30
    Excellent start to the day.

  2. Peter Flynn says

    Smokie,

    There were some great gets.

I’ll tell you about them another day. In the Nursing Home.

  3. Lovely day had by all and thanks to Andrew and Helen Fithall and Peter Flynn (and Annie) for organising the Nursery part of it. Had the tips been pooled we’d have had a collectively better day.

    D. Downer- on fire early.
I fought back in Chosen To Fly’s race.
    Failed to back Proliferate.
And then Cascabel was a little unlucky.
    Face Off was very disappointing.

So D. Downer went home cashed up. I suspect P. Flynn had a few dollars in the pocket. I went home about even but not as even as usual. Wally Beaver had the King Prawns special on his way home.
