Almanac Soccer: The Tykes and The Lilywhites

The Tykes are on a roll.

For a team that had such little in the way of “silverware” they had to rush out and buy a display cabinet * late last season when they won the Johnson Paint Trophy, the new Championship Season 2016/2017 is looking very good indeed.

After languishing down the bottom of Division One early in the 2014/2015 season, things suddenly turned around for the Tykes and wins came a plenty. So much so they made the play offs and came through with flying colours. to gain promotion to The Championship.

To put it bluntly I wasn’t too optimistic about the season ahead, especially when Ipswich Town beat us 4-2. But we came back with wins against Derby 2-0 and QPR 3-2. The loss against ladder leaders Huddersfield Town 2-1 was an honourable one, but next game we bounced back and gave Rotherham a good spanking 4-0

In their last match, played last Saturday against Preston North End, they beat The Lilywhites 2 1. The report of the game suggests it was a very close battle and Barnsley, although outplayed for most of the game managed the win against the cellar dwellers. Commiserations to John Green a Lilywhite tragic.

I know it’s early in the season but The Tykes are going well, sitting in third spot on The Championship Table. I’m keeping my fingers crossed they continue in such positive form.

  1. Barnsley – Dickie Bird, Michael Parkinson, Darren Gough and Arthur Scargill. You keep esteemed company Rod. Something to tide you over until the full strength Bombers next season?

  2. Peter, I’m not sure I had a John Smith lager with any of those chaps, but I did share many, with lots of the local lads at the Fitzwilliam.

  3. Peter, Just after reading your comments I passed my local second hand bookshop, and there on the special’s table was Michael Parkinson”s autobiography. I checked out the contents and there is heaps about Barnsley Football Club. I had to buy it!!

  4. Thanks Rod.

Just wondering what does Tykes mean? And why are Barnsley called the Tykes?

  5. Dr Rocket, I think Tykes is a good Yorkshire person. And Barnsley is a Yorkshire club full of good Tykes.

The Tykes just thrashed Woverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) 4-0 and stay at third place on the table.

  6. Thanks Rod, good to the Tykes beat the mob from the Black Country!
