Almanac Racing – Memsie Stakes Day

Last week’s anticipation was misplaced. The Valley was dreary. Some of the racing was good but it was a long way from spring. Thus I’m wary to hype Saturday’s first Group One in Melbourne this season, knowing that there are many better days ahead. Yet it’s only 5 weeks until the Epsom and the Guineas runs the following Saturday, so clearly the good ‘uns are ready to display their wares.

There are a few of them lining up in the Memsie (MR7, 1400m, WFA, G1), most interestingly Black Heart Bart, Alpine Eagle and Sofia Rosa, three that I’m keen to track in future starts. Palentino and Rising Romance are other genuine top-graders engaged. As usual track rating, bias and pace are key factors and, as I’m going to get to the meeting, I’ll be trying to adapt my staking accordingly. BOM’s telling us we’ll have rain the next few days but, critically, not on Saturdays. These tracks drain very well but deteriorate if it is wet when they horses are chopping it up. I’m reckoning on about a slow6.

Olly’s back on Lord of the Cats and will be hoping for easy sectionals again but if Charmed Harmony and others push fwd he’s cactus and the swoopers will be licking their lips. Plenty of stayers will go in the blackbook. Most of these will push deep in to the Carnival. Leaning at the moment to 2, 14, 9.

Doubt I’ll bother getting to the Heath until the 5th (1100m, SWP, G3) which admittedly has a long tail but also has some competitive horses – Under The Louvre, Shiraz, Hellbent and, fresh, Santa Ana Lane. Possibly trying 3, 2, 10.

Overall, a good meeting. If your footy obligations are over and the weather’s fine, get out to Caulfield before the fascinators clutter the lawns in October. Otherwise be sure to monitor the replays.

Good luck!

Comments

  1. First caveat…forecast hail etc didn’t eventuate Thursday and forecast is dryish. Good4?

  2. Will be on Hi World in the second. Was $6 when 5th first up in the Memsie last year!

  3. Caulfield
Race 3 My Sister Lil, ready to win here
    Race 4 Badajoz
    Race 6 Blue Tycoon EW
Memsie Palentino, really good 1st up hoping the speed is on, I’m Alpine Eagles biggest fan but I’m not sure how genuine he is yet.
Race 8 best 60/1 shot anywhere is Pinstripe Lane, fantastic first up and a hope if he repeats it.
Adelaide is a poor meeting and back to the big track Gogo Grace is a chance in race 3 lots of new ones and some costly ones so hard to know. Race 5 Fine Approach is well suited

  4. Badajoz scratched Jock. I was keen on Our Harmony in that race.. also scratched.
    Track will be firm here.

  5. Lord of the Sky scratching makes a big difference in the Memsie, maybe Mahuta from just off the speed is now the go.

  6. That’s going to make it tough for swoopers. Fav probably evens at best!

btw Jock…Heza Ripper scr here- a moral over there?

  7. Nope, but a hope, Miss Gunpowder is pretty good, raced in Group 1 doubt Heza Ripper will get to that level.
