Almanac Racing: Adelaide Cup

I have three sets of Adelaide Cup Day fields in front of me.

Tomorrow’s, as is nowadays the wont, are on my computer. The fields, befitting a grumpy old man’s world view, are mediocre. Most of them are listed as ads for future meetings. The Cup itself (AR7, 3200m, G2!) is OK…but $400k for this lot! I’ll back the toppy for a laugh. The Adelaide vowels. My best bet is in the last. Reckon Miss Sydney wins. Can also foresee all the soaks loading up on That’s A Slab (AR9, No1) in what is the “Drink Driving? GROW UP Handicap”. Hmmm…

The 1975 and 1978 racebooks are next to the computer.

The 1975 programme (19 May), beginning with a Steeplechase, had a $50k feature with Dayana (R.Higgins) as topweight. Carrying 11kgs less, Alfy Matthews steered Soulman to victory.

The 1978 Cup ($75k, 15 May) was won by the topweight – Hyperno (Mick Goreham). My book has it as 7/1, with So Called the 6/4 fav. The support races look pretty good on that day. The last was the “Robert A Lee Stakes”. Anyone remember the result? Dad’s market in the book has Nearest 5/4, Nunkalowe 5/1, Doxam 3/1 and Alfred The Great 9/2 as leading chances.

Hopefully it is a terrific day at Morphettville. I might wander down to the Valley. These holiday Mondays are nowadays ghost towns. Close to home and nice weather – I don’t mind.

Alister Clark there next Friday night and Flemington and Rosehill next Saturday.

I need a bank.

That’s one of the better reasons to back a horse the Adelaide vowels.

    Impossible.
