Almanac Racing- 31-7-10

Tomorrow’s meetings (Saturday 31/07) are the last of the 09/10 season with the official horses’ birthday following on August 1. From then the slow build-up begins to Spring with the better horses beginning to reappear.

To access the fields I went to the “Racing and Sports” site, though I thought that I’d mistakenly found a satirical alternative…”Ganderton Suspended For Dishonesty”, it gushed, leaving me wondering whether the news was the suspension or the lie. Their other feature story (again) was that the Breasley Medal was going down to the wire, ensuring at least a competitive, interesting and presumably honest day’s toil from the hoops at the Heath.

There might be a smokey in the first with Tim Martin producing Mr Cool Cat, currently rated $10. This may be a market mover to watch.

The feature race is the WFA Gr3 1200m Bletchingly Stakes (now there’s a sire Budge!) in which the quality horse Velocitea is favourite but much interest will surround the return of AJC Derby star Shoot Out. Tollesprit, Keano and Royal Ida are also amongst a good standard field but you’d have to do speed maps and track ratings to come up with a bet.

Which I won’t because I have other things to do.

I’ll be swinging the bag at Fannie Bay’s Palmerston Cup meeting in which the favorite is Stephen Brown’s in-form Canali. It is worth noting that Mark Pegus has been named to ride Sheila Arnold’s Crosswise which could be a pointer.

Monday will be a very big day up here in Darwin. It is very hot and the Cup will be the last of 9 races. There will be 20,000+ clamouring for another drink and a bet. Hawks Bay is the popular elect whilst there are plenty of fans of the topweight Activation. My advice is to join in the Territory spirit, grab a cold beer and plonk E/W No7, Instructor.
