Almanac Racing

It’s a familiar game plan.

For Flemington, query how the track will be racing. For Sydney, consult the weather forecast.

HQ has copped a whack, though punters shouldn’t whinge. Don’t bet early! It’s reasonable to deliberate on the likely pattern, especially for the straight course. Though, perhaps, “stakeholders” should do so more tactfully than M.Payne who should have a poster of Mick Goodie on her wall rather than on the dartboard. Until evidence suggests otherwise, I’m favouring inside marbles and on-pacers, but recognising that this can generate “forward pressure” and a resultant opportunity for some late swooping.

The “super” day is littered with features. The fields are OK – probably not vintage.

I want to watch MR3 (1100m, 3yo). Ken’s Dream should beat these. Unbeaten Matty adds interest. There are a couple of others to be monitored. Sweet Sherry is a likely type, but both she and Waterloo Sunset have drawn terribly and will perhaps have other ambitions.

A safe bet to kick off the Quaddy appears to be Miss Rose de Lago. Leads and wins at backable odds.

In the Newmarket (MR7) I’ll remain true (for now) to Star Turn.

The Australian Cup (MR8) has some depth but Jameka does look the measuring stick. I might E/W Ecuador to get a soft run.

Up at Rosehill they have the fantastic Coolmore card, nowadays consistently a better fixture than its Flemington challenger but, as always, clouded by the relentless rain…Heavy9 today (Wednesday). Do your form for wet trackers and watch for the better going. The “bad” draws might be good. I’m (gulp!!) tempted to tackle the $34 First Seal (SR7, No1) from Barrier 17 (last time, I promise).

The stakes are high so I’m keen to get involved on Saturday – they’ll be trying.

As usual for a holiday weekend, there are dozens of meetings. A trend of recent times has been that the Monday is really poorly attended – expect Moonee Valley to be ghost town for their card which coincides with Morphettville’s Adelaide Cup. Hopefully the SA public turn up for what once was a big day out.

Tips and suggestions welcomed.

Good luck!

Comments

  1. Corowa Cup, this Sunday. We’ll be there.

Mildura Cup and Stony Creek Cup this weekend. I was hoping that the Kim Hann trained Glenrowan Prince was running in Mildura, but is not listed as a runner.

    Glen!

  2. The track walkers say that Flem should play the same as last week. Pace was well and truly on in the 1400m races last week and allowed them to run on. They went steady in the two 1600m races and the leaders/inside horses had the advantage.

The 6m – 8m mark off inside down the straight should be the place to be with very light winds predicted.

    I prefer the fillies in R3 – waterloo sunset/villa rosa/lilac lane

I am a Star looks best bet of the day in Kewney. Rated 11kg + better than rivals and you can get black and white figures.

Will have something small e/w on Redkirk Warrior in Newmarket. Always looked a potential G1 winner in HK and backed him in the HK derby this weekend two years ago. Looks to get good cover and will be launching late.

  3. Good work The Judge. Beat 100 years of history winning the Newmarket first up.
