Almanac Lunch – Odd Friday (April 13): With Barry Mitchell

Odd Friday/Almanac Lunch with Barry Mitchell.

Barry played 214 games of AFL between 1984 and 1992. As a rover, he was always among the top possession getters in his 170 games for the Swans, and subsequent games for Collingwood and Carlton. He won the Swans best and fairest in 1991 and All Australian selection.

After his playing career ended he became the runner for Carlton and then an assistant coach. After 4 years as assistant at Carlton he became an assistant at Hawthorn and was there for their 2008 premiership. He was also the senior coach of affiliate VFL club Box Hill. He then moved to Fremantle as an assistant. He move back to Melbourne and continued with the Swans as an ‘opposition analyst’.

His son Tom joined the Swans under the father son rule, and is now with Hawthorn. His daughter Chelsea joined the Hawthorn VFLW side in 2018. He is now an aspiring writer. His pieces are published on the Almanac site. He has great insight into the current game, and will be speaking with The Footy Almanac’s John Harms.
