Almanac (Footy) Poetry – The Rhymer: What Ground Is That?

What Ground Is That?

Say you’re playing a game at Blundstone Arena
where the hell do you go?
are we home or away?
what do you say?
That ground could be in Argentina.

It used to be simple the ovals were all named
after the suburb they lived in
Subi, Manuka
Kardinia Park
Now a sponsor’s brand is proclaimed

Maybe a Bank or perhaps a new airline
attaches their name to the ground
It may last a year
and then disappear
Before a new name is assigned

But we’re none the wiser about where in the land
our favourite team might be playing
could be Alice Springs
or Hobart or Lonnie
All we have to go on’s the brand.

TIO Stadium? That don’t tell you much,
That’s another one I can’t recall.
Is it the Gabba?
or maybe Docklands?
Forgive me I’m way out of touch.

So I’ll leave it to you to name the location
of newly named AFL grounds
GMHBA Stadium
Aurora and AAMI
They may not even be in our nation.

With more games overseas are we now inviting
sponsors we can’t relate to
like ???? beer
?? or ?????
In stadiums once used for bullfighting?

The money is welcome by Footy I’m sure
as long as it gets to the players
but it doesn’t help me
to instruct my taxi
I don’t know where they play anymore.

  1. That’s why we here in civilisation still have the Adelaide Oval. No confusion there.
