Kate Birrell

Artist Bio – Kate Birrell

Kate is a painter living and working in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield.

The subject of her paintings are very much focused on day to day life.

She is particularly interested in Melbournes’ way of living, as it has a culture, a sporting realm and an identity that is quite unique to other Australian cities.

Kate was initially drawn to footy as a subject for her art works when as a teenager she used to sketch one of her brothers playing in the back yard on his own.

“One brother in particular; he was adept in the skills of kicking, commentating, booing and cheering.. all at one time. It was these little, dramatic scenarios that in some way initially fuelled my own imagination. I wanted to to capture the fleeting beauty of those moments before they passed.”

Kate has had two solo exhibitions, undertaken many commissioned pieces including the cover art for the Footy Almanac 2013 and she recently won the Peoples Choice Award in the Art Town 2014, Public Art Project, held at Chapel off Chapel Gallery, Prahran.
