Almanac Art: Football at ‘Arlparra Store’ by Katie Kemarre

I spoiled myself with this July 2008 painting by Katie Kemarre entitled ‘Football at Arlparra store’. It is located in an area called Utopia- central dessert region.

The painting is perfect. Love the colours of the earth, the movement all over the ground. No congestion and flooding in this game. Is the ball with the pink and white player heading for goals on the left? Could be a competition to find the ball. Can understand why you bought it. It flies out at you.

Thanks Yvette. It is a great painting. We could have a competition to guess where the ball is, which you would win!

  3. Beautiful.

What a painting. So vibrant. Celebrating community as much as the game. There is something special about a game of football and it can be seen at a local level much more than it can at the official AFL fixtures. This was something that struck a deep chord during the AFLW and at our teenagers’ scratch matches. It’s community. Katie Kemarre’s painting brings that something special to life. Cheers

Dear Rick thanks for your comment. Your observations concerning footy at the local level and the AFLW hit the nail on the head.

  7. Very nice. I once watched a mob of about 50 black fellas playing a game of footy under lights at an indigenous community on the desert road to Uluru, so much joy and fun and speed and flair, and they welcomed a couple of our white fella kids to the game. This painting reminds me of it. Wish I could remember the name of the place!! The oval was actually green grass, in the middle of the red earth desert all around.
PS. I think the ball is at centre half forward, just outside the 50 at the western end of the ground.
