AFL 1998 – Twenty Years On: Port Adelaide (10th)

Another mid-table finish in 1998 from Port saw Jack Cahill replaced by Mark Williams at season’s end. Although perhaps not meeting the early expectations of the Power die-hards (and the Footy Record it seems), this list matured into one of the dominant sides of the early 2000s.

Nine of the players shown here got to wrap their hands around the silverware in 2004, with Dew and Harley flag winners elsewhere. Several eventually departed to other clubs and in a couple of notable cases, it was to the Albertonians’ benefit.

Quite a few of this list were seen in coaches boxes in 2018, a couple are prominent on the gogglebox.

If you’ve spied any of these guys over the years at your local hair restoration boutique, getting tyres at Ron Heath’s or just having a butcher with mine host Peter Brien, drop us a line.

  1. At least one good name in that list…

Hope, No 44 is a premiership coach in a week and a bit’s time.

  2. See Chalmers most Friday mornings in Central Market, some sort of manager, tempted to ask how he feels about that $50,000 fine for draft tampering!! Recommend Dickie & Francou visit Ashley & Martin. Glad we swapped Tom Harley….. Swap of M.Bode with Frootloops for S. Burgoyne might just be best trade deal ever. M. Wilson is physio for Magpies.

  3. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says

Steinberner is a ripper name DB, thanks for pointing that out.

Ta for that Bucko – the Crows had their eyes on Pick 7 and Lawrie Angwin didn’t disappoint.

  4. Swish- one Sunday afternoon in a Hutt Street pub- you know the one- the door burst open and a large man in some sort of drag and three attractive women swept through like a cyclonic Fringe show. Inside five minutes the parade of movement and noise and Vaudeville finished and they left. It was an extraordinary sight but, I suspect, just a regular day for Adam Heuskes.

I reckon his on-field approach was the same.

  5. Plenty of amusement from the Harley’s re Tom with hair
