Tragic History 101

by MCR

When the tricolours take the field this Friday evening they will be attempting become the first Dogs side since September 1970 (the 28th to be exact) to play in a Grand Final……..of any sort !

Our team that night was

B: Casey, McGhie, Rippon
HB: McGowan, Merrington – how did we win, Joslin
C: Power, Magee (Capt), Thorpe
HF: Sandilands, Bartlett, McKenzie
F: Round, Quinlan, Austin
FOLL: Dempsey, Greenwood
ROV: Bissett
19th Simmons 20th Radziminski (The hero)

28/9/1970 – Moon Unit Zappa turned 3 years old & the President of Egypt (1956-1970) Gamal Nasser , died of a heart attack

Since that evening, well over 14,000 days ago – (it will be roughly 14,776 should we be there) the following has occurred. or there have been

* 8 Prime ministers of Australia – Gorton, McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Keating, Howard, Rudd
* 8 Premiers of the state of Victoria – Bolte, Hamer, Thompson, Cain, Kirner, Kennett, Bracks, Brumby
* 8 Presidents of the USA – Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush (1), Clinton, Bush (2) Obama
* 7 Prime Ministers of UK – Heath, Wilson, Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown
* 11 different VFL/AFL teams have won premierships
* 12 teams playing in the then VFA/VFL have left the competition – Brunswick, Camberwell, Caulfield, Dandenong, Geelong West, Mordialloc, Northcote, Oakleigh, Prahran, Sunshine, Waverley & Yarraville, with a number of others including Moorabbin, Kilsyth, Berwick & Traralgon coming AND going during this period
* 10 different teams have won the English 1st Division/Premiership – Everton, Arsenal, Derby, Leeds, Liverpool, Nott Forest, Ast Villa, Man Utd, Blackburn, Chelsea
* 19 different MLB teams have won world series (guess who hasn’t)
* 15 different teams have won the Superbowl

* The Berlin wall has come down, whilst the Twin Towers went up……then came down again
* The Westgate Bridge, came down & then went back up again
* Colour TV came in, Nelson Mandella came out (of prison)
* Watergate was a political disaster, Heaven’s Gate a monumental disaster

Disaster. A nice way to finish this “uplifting” piece.

Great to see Round, B. in the forward pocket.

He led the Swans to the 1982 night series title.

Quinlan at full-forward – so the two future Brownlow medalists with other clubs alongside each other at their original club.

Reckon the Joslin on the back flank was a ridgy-didge local – Graham (?).
Brother of Les, who toured England in 1968…

Remember Ron McGowan as a very tough defender.

    Scraggers lost 7 of those blokes to other clubs;
“Bones”McGhie to Richmond, (after he smacked then president Jack Collins),
David Thorpe, also to Richmond(saw him chase a bloke in his footy gear out on to Willy rd. whilst coaching Yarraville)
    Round to South
    Quinlan to Fitzroy
Sandilands and “wee” Georgie Bissett to collingwood
and Gary(‘show me the money’) Dempsey to Norfffff.
They tried to get rid of “Chooka” Merrington by leaving him next to the kerb on hard rubbish day, but still got left behind.
Laurie Rippon worked in the bottle shop at the Powell( buggered if I would have trusted him carrying a slab to the car!)

Great stuff mate, here’s hoping that the duck is broken. The 11 MLB teams that haven’t made won the world series:

    AL East
    Tampa Bay Rays

    AL Central
    Cleveland Indians
    Detroit Tigers

    AL West
    Seattle Mariners
    Texas Rangers

    NL East
    Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals

    NL Central
    Chicago Cubs
    Houston Astros

    NL West
    Colorado Rockies
    San Francisco Giants
    San Doego Padres

  4. Tim – Detroit defeated San Diego Padres 4-1 in the 1984 WS.

A Cubs/Tigers WS would have been a closer contest.

I should have known that, which team have I missed then? The Milwaukee Brewers? though I thought they got up in the early 80’s?

  6. Richard Naco says
