2013 AFL Grand Final Infographic

The big day is almost upon us!

As such, the biggest game of the year deserves a big infographic to go with it!

Buckle-up, the dangerous Hawks and classy Dockers will go at it Saturday arvo for AFL’s ultimate prize. It should be a corker!

Also on the day, I’ll be helping out at La Trobe Uni’s upstart magazine do their live broadcast coverage of the 2013 AFL Grand Final: Pre-game, quarter and half-time breaks, and post-game streaming will be available for you to stay up-to-date with all the action.

I’ll be doing the graphics, (so you know they’ll be good!) tune in from 1:30 at upstart.net.au

  1. Great stuff Cobba! Based on results at end of Home & Away, of the past 10 grand finals, the number one attacking team has made the GF 5 times but on only one occasion have they won (Geelong in ’07). Correspondingly, the number 1 defensive team have made the GF 7 times and have won 2 times (Swans in ’12 and Geelong in ’07).

On 3 occasions has a team that sits outside the top 5 attacking teams made the GF to win on one occasion (Swans ’05 were the 14th most scoring team!!). All of these three teams had one thing in common – Ross Lyon (Swans ’05 and ’06, and Saints ’10). Only once has a team outside the top 5 defensive teams made the GF and they got smashed (Port “07).

7 of the last 10 winners have had a lower percentage at the end of the home and away.

This year after the Home & Away – Hawks are ranked 1 for attack and 5 for defense. Dockers 11 for attack and 1 for defense (keeping Ross connected for the 4th time in 11 years for lowly ranked attacking teams to make the GF).

After all that – it seems it is still anyone’s game!!

    Magnificent.
The one stat that has been missing from every similar but less fabulously presented analysis is average winning margin head to head in Finals.
Answer – Freo by 30 points
